As part of the series of interventions to the state in the COVID-19 response initiative, Bauchi State Government has received a donation of personal protective equipment (PPEs) from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Integrated Health Program (IHP).
While presenting the items, the State Director, Integrated Health Project (IHP), Dr Siaka Alhassan said that USAID has been supporting the state to among other things, improve access to primary healthcare services, essential commodities and increase demand for services in an effort towards strengthening health system of the State.
He also said that the integrated Health Programme which is funded by the USAID considered it fit and proper to procure essential items to support the state in the COVID-19 response mechanism.
He added that “especially redirecting and provision of Personal Protecting Equipments (PPEs) that would be used both in primary and secondary health care centres of the state. Noted that, the project identified the huge gaps in the prevention and control measures at the grassroots levels.,”
According to him, Healthcare workers remained veritable instruments in driving quality and improved service delivery, therefore, have suffered greatly from the global health crisis of COVID-19.
Siaka Alhassan stressed that “it has become pertinent to provide and safeguard our health providers in their places of work so as to guaranteed smooth and effective operations of health in our communities.”
Some of the donated items included 1432 packs of 3-ply surgical facemasks with hanging rope, 1029 bottles of Alcohol-based hand sanitizers, 646 bottles of Bleach with 10% chlorine solution as well as 646 rolls of cotton wool respectively.
While receiving the equipment on behalf of the Bauchi State Government, the Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BASPHCDA), Dr Rilwanu Mohammed appreciated the long-standing relationship and consistent contributions of the USAID funded Integrated Health Program to the state through the agency.
He said that “the kind of technical support for the Agency to become a viable and more responsive coordinated organization in the delivery of impactful health intervention to the grassroots is well appreciated.”
According to Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, having donated the items directly to the primary health care centres in order to support the infection, prevention, and control, the Agency will ensure proper and effective utilization of the PPEs.
He, therefore, explained that already the Agency has planned to instruct the LGA health departments to observe the receiving, distribution, and monitoring movement of all the equipment at the health centres.
The IHP funded by the United States Agency for International Development is among the key Development partners that have been supporting the state, contributing towards revitalizing primary health care by helping the state health systems, strengthening services facilities, and clinics, employ an integrated model for a full complement of high-quality round-the-clock health services in every ward.
Bauchi State in collaboration with Development partners has been working to achieve universal health coverage, especially in the areas of maternal and child-held care and nutrition aimed at reducing mortality in mothers and children in the state as contained in a statement by Ibrahim Sani, Information Officer, BASPHCDA.
