The National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the Coalition of Society for The Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN) have expressed concern at the rate Nigerians disregard the COVID-19 preventive rules.
The duo reminded Nigerians that COVID-19 has not been defeated completely, hence the need the observe the protocols is necessary.
Speaking at a Community Engagement and Sensitisation on COVID-19 Pandemic in collaboration with COSROPIN, the Director-General of NOA, Dr Garba Abari said: “We have painstakingly observed that Nigerians are no longer adhering to the safety measures.”
He said: “Despite the efforts of Government in ensuring that Nigerians are adequately protected from the Virus wherever they choose to live, most Nigerians have regrettably chosen to become nonchalant and out rightly careless in adhering to the COVID-19 safety guidelines.
“This attitude, however, portends grave danger to the respite we are currently enjoying and we risk experiencing a second wave of a spike in infections and rise in cases of community transmissions as being witnessed in most European cities across the world,” he said.

He, however, said the event is a continuation of the strides already made in trying to keep Nigerians informed on the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to continue to adhere to the safety protocols, guidelines and preventive measures.
In his remarks, National President of COSROPIN Senator Eze Ajoku said: “Many people are beginning to feel that COVID-19 is over, and have therefore abandoned all the rules and regulations and the standing protocol against COVID-19 preventive measures and that underscores why we are here again this morning for the reawakening campaign.”
He said consequently, the virus is rearing its ugly head again, thereby necessitating this sensitisation program in order to remind people particularly older persons that COVID-19 has not been totally defeated, it is still there and it is a threat.
“This becomes necessary that we continue to observe all the standing protocols preventive measures that are like personal hygiene, sanitation, wearing face masks, observing physical distancing and avoiding large crowds,” he added.
