Corruption’ll end in Nigeria when Nigerians decide to stop it ― Yusuf Ali

Published by

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Yusuf Olaolu Ali, has declared that corruption will only end in Nigeria when Nigerians decide to end it.

Ali made the declaration, on Tuesday, in Abuja, in his keynote address at the launch of Akin Fadeyi Foundation (AFF) three-year project end line report 2020, adding that though corruption is not good all Nigerians are involved in it.

The senior advocate noted that the top to bottom approach to fighting corruption would not work, adding that until the average people see the evil in corruption, it would not end.

Ali submitted that it was a sad commentary that it was only in the country that corruption had tribe and religion, declaring that, “Corruption is corruption no matter how beneficial it is.

“It is only in Nigeria that corruption has tribe and religion. We cannot fight corruption when we are selective.”

While lamenting that only the crocked are celebrated in the country today, Ali said, “it is the day we decide to end the corruption that corruption will stop. Let’s maintain very stoic opposition to corruption.”

He, however, called on the government to block every space for corruption, submitting that, “the more bureaucracy you create, the more you give space for corruption. The less bureaucracy, the corruption.”

He urged the government must find a way of acknowledging the incorruptible in the society, adding that the young ones must be encouraged not to be corrupt in order to win the war against corruption.

In his remarks at the event, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, disclosed that the Corps had been partnering with the Akin Fadeyi Foundation in the fight against corruption among its officers and men.

He informed that through the FlagIt App developed by the foundation, Nigerians had been able to make complaints to the Corps, which he said were being promptly attended to, adding that FRSC partnered both the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Department of State Services (DSS) in tackling corruption among its personnel.

Oyeyemi declared that fighting corruption requires collaborative efforts of Nigerians and called on the people to support the government in its fight against corruption.

Meanwhile, the MacArthur Foundation has announced that it has approved another three-year grant for the Akin Fadeyi Foundation to enable it to continue with its works in the areas of fighting corruption in the country.

This was revealed by its Director in Nigeria, Dr Kole Shettima, while giving his goodwill message at the launch, adding that the occasion was a scorecard for Akin Fadeyi Foundation.
