Chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have said that with the success of last Saturday’s congress, the party is poised to take over power in 2023.
Chief among them is Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State who spoke with newsmen in Makurdi on Monday after he returned from Abuja, the venue of the congress.
Ortom lamented that the APC-led government has destroyed the socio-economic life of Nigerians, adding that insecurity had been the order of the day.
He described the administration of Muhammadu Buhari as being the worst government in the history of Nigeria, even worse than military government.
According to Ortom, “we (PDP) are determined to take over leadership of this country come 2023 because of the failure of the APC-led government. They are being deceitful and not being able to secure our land. They have rather succeeded in destroying our economy, our security, our social life and everything you can think of in this country.
“I have been privileged to read the history of Nigeria and those that have been destroying us including the military. Usually, we say that the worst democratic government is better than the military government.
“That is what we used to say but for the purpose of APC-led government, I want to say that the worst military government we have had in Nigeria is better than this particular government led by APC.
“I have never seen anything like this; people who don’t want you to tell them the truth or advise them, try to twist things and tell the world that you are against them.”
While calling on Nigerians to support PDP to rescue the nation from APC, Ortom said that the APC government had polarised the country.
Another chieftain and former deputy governor of Ekiti State and gubernatorial aspirant in the forthcoming election under the umbrella of the PDP, Professor Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, on Monday stated that the party has, through its last Saturday’s convention, displayed to citizens that the opposition is ready to rescue the country from the alleged maladministration of the ruling APC.
Olusola-Eleka who stated this in a statement signed by his media aide, Adebisi Adeola, on Monday, congratulated the newly elected National Working Committee (NWC) of our great party led by Senator Iyorchia Ayu.
The former deputy governor added that the occasion has clearly shown the world that “PDP remains the guardian of democratic tenets and principles in Nigeria, and would continue to remain so.”
He equally felicitated other members of the party and wished the elected officials a successful tenure with all-around electoral victories, promising that the party stakeholders in Ekiti will work with the new leadership to reinvigorate the party for victory in the 2022 governorship poll.
He said: “It has shown the forthrightness of our leaders to uphold the tenets of true democracy. We have shown the world that we are the guardians of democratic tenets and principles in Nigeria for the benefit of the Nigerian people.
“I hereby congratulate the newly-elected National Working Committee (NWC) of our great party, led by H.E. Sen. Iyorchia Ayu. I felicitate with you all and I pray for a successful tenure with all-around electoral victories.
“I commend the meritorious efforts and principled leadership of our governors and all party leaders across the board. They have all played excellent roles in ensuring cohesion and unity in the party which has resulted in this successful convention.”
The governorship aspirant, however, implored “all members of our party to support the installed leadership and together rescue Nigeria from the deficient leadership of the APC-led government.”
In a related development, the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, on Monday, expressed optimism that the PDP will take over power in the 2023 presidential election, with the successful conclusion of the party’s National Convention held in Abuja.
Hon. Elumelu in a statement obtained by Nigerian Tribune, also congratulated the National Chairman-elect, Senator Ayu and other national officers elected at the just concluded convention.
“On behalf of our members in the House of Representatives, I congratulate our distinguished leaders and teeming members of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the successful conduct of the 2021 National Convention of our party.
“We also congratulate the National Chairman-elect, Senator Iyorchia Ayu and the other national officers-elect at the national convention, as they prepare to assume office in December.
“Indeed, the unity of purpose and the spirit of sportsmanship witnessed at the event, despite all the challenges, further underscore the democratic credentials of our party as the platform for all Nigerians in the collective determination to rescue our nation from the stranglehold of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and return her to the part of good governance, national cohesion and economic prosperity.
“The PDP national convention further highlights the readiness, capability and willpower of the PDP to regain power in 2023 and end the life of misery, poverty, hunger, bloodletting, unemployment, suppression and humongous corruption that have been the hallmark of the APC failed and anti-people administration.
“The widespread interest by Nigerians and the nationwide applause that trailed the successful conduct of the convention confirm the resolve of our citizens to march with the PDP to take back our country from the suppressive grip of APC, come 2023.
“It is therefore imperative that we remain united and ensure that all interests within the party are carried along in the task ahead. We must continue to foster an all-inclusive platform which provides a level playground for all.
“We must bear in mind that the task before us is an enormous one, given the immensity of the confidence Nigerians repose on our party as their only hope.
“We therefore commend our leaders and organs of the party; National Executive Committee (NEC), the National Working Committee (NWC), Board of Trustees (BoT) the PDP Governor’s Forum, the 2021 National Convention Organizing Committee (NCOC) the youths, women and other critical stakeholders, for their efforts towards a successful convention.
“We also commend members of the National Assembly Minority Caucus for their resilience and commitment in standing for Nigerians despite the APC government’s suppressive disposition.
“While pledging the unalloyed support and collaboration of the entire members of the PDP in the House of Representatives, we reiterate that the task of rescuing Nigeria from the devastation of the APC is paramount to all at this point in our national life,” Hon. Elumelu assured.
Lagos State chapter of PDP also called on the newly-elected national chairman of the party to immediately commence the exercise of getting all members united and purposeful in winning their states and the 2023 presidential poll.
The party chapter said this in its congratulatory message to all the newly-elected members of the National Exco of PDP, including Arch. Setonji Koshoedo, now the Deputy National Secretary-elect, who got elected on the Lagos PDP ticket, saying it was so proud of them.
The party chapter, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Barr. Taofik Gani, while tasking Ayu with the duty, expressed the belief that the newly elected national chairman would bring into play his wealth of experience and contacts to ensure victory for PDP nationwide, come 2023.
Lagos PDP thanked the party delegates, who gathered in Abuja for voting Koshoedo “our nominee from Lagos State,” saying with that singular act, the elders of the party in the state had been given a vote of confidence, adding: “With Arch Setonji Koshoedo representing Lagos State at National Exco, we are confident that winning Lagos State for PDP is now imminent.”
