Controversies trail arrest, probe of Ganduje’s wife by EFCC

Published by

Controversies have trailed the purported arrest and probe Hafsat Ganduje, the wife of the governor of Kano State by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

News had gone round on Tuesday morning that Mrs Ganduje was arrested by the EFCC following bribery and land fraud allegations reported by her son, Abdul-Azeez.

It was also reported that Mrs Ganduje has been released after interrogation by the anti-graft commission.

Meanwhile, the state government has denied the reports of Mrs’s Ganduje’s arrest as mere rumours being peddled by mischief-makers.

A reliable source at the commission had said the governor’s wife was interrogated till the early hours of Monday.

The source added that she arrived back in Kano on Tuesday morning after the grilling by the anti-graft body.

“She was released on Tuesday and asked to report back when she is needed,” said the source.

A competent source within the state government told Tribune Online on Tuesday that Hafsat Ganduje is presently at the government house in Kano and she has an official engagement at Danbatta local government later in the day.

It will be recalled that Governor Ganduje’s wife was earlier invited to report to the EFCC’s Abuja headquarters on September 13. An online-based newspaper, however, said EFCC threatened to arrest her after failing to honour the invitation.

But the state government, in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, a copy made of which was available to pressmen on Tuesday, called on the good people of Kano State to disregard the rumour and also remain calm.

The state government expressed regrets that the content of the unfounded story could not be attributed to any credible source such as the purported arresting agency, the EFCC.

Garba said the governor’s wife has not been arrested or detained and she is presently discharging her responsibilities.
