Constitution Review: Lobby state assemblies, Lawan tells agitators

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has advised those who have presented memoranda for fundamental amendments of certain provisions of the 1999 Constitution to try and lobby the State Houses of Assemblies.

Senator Lawan gave the suggestion on Monday in his opening remarks at the 2021 Award Ceremony of the Senate Press Corps held at the Conference Hall of the NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja.

The Senate last Friday concluded its public hearing on the Constitution Review process in Abuja.

Speakers at the zonal public hearings and the event in Abuja had canvassed State Police, review of revenue allocation process and restructuring of the nation political architecture amongst other contentious issues.

The President of the Senate who noted that some of the amendments must statutorily receive the blessings of the state assemblies asked agitated Nigerians to equally reach out to state lawmakers.

Responding to criticisms trailing what has been viewed as the indifference of the National Assembly to the excesses of the Executive arm of government, Senator Lawan said the ninth Senate “shall remain committed to the country. Despite criticisms, we know what is right for this country and we shall continue to do that.”

On the award conferred on him, “Parliamentary Leadership for Good Governance and Budget Cycle Restoration,” the President of the Senate thanked the Senate Press Corps for according him recognition.

He said the feat achieved in returning the country to the January-December Budget Cycle was achieved by the consensus of both chambers of Parliament.

He said: “It is an award taken on behalf of the Senate and House of Representatives since the budget cycle was achieved by the two houses.”

Other awardees were the Senators Douye Diri, Hope Uzodimma and Ifeanyi Okowa, governors of Bayelsa, Imo and Delta states, respectively who received awards as Ambassadors of the Senate.

Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Ifeanyi Abaribe, received the Constructive Engagement in Parliament award while Senator Ali Ndume received the Most Media Friendly Senator award.
