Confusion as Nigerian man flees community after severe beating over sexual identity

Published by

Tension grips Ojeta community in Delta as 28-year-old Harrison Ukperajoba has reportedly fled his hometown following a brutal assault that left him in a coma due to his sexual identity.

According to an anonymous source who spoke with TRIBUNE ONLINE, the violence began after Ukperajoba’s parents reported him to a community leader, expressing concerns about his sexual behavior and activities.

Accused of being gay, Ukperajoba was subjected to intense interrogation and viciously beaten by residents. The attack quickly escalated, resulting in severe injuries that left him unconscious and in critical condition. Despite his injuries, Ukperajoba managed to escape under unclear circumstances.

The details of his escape remain unclear, with some suggesting he may have been helped by sympathizers, while others believe he fled on his own after regaining consciousness.

A Business Education graduate from Delta State University, some of the residents say Ukperajoba has long faced significant adversity, including social ostracism, threats, and violence. His experience highlights the extreme dangers that LGBTQ+ individuals face in areas where their sexual identity is both socially rejected and legally penalised.
