Concede Edo North Senatorial seat to either Owan, Akoko Edo, Senator Braimah begs Etsako

Peeved by the continued dominance of Etsako people in the politics of Edo North Senatorial district, Senator Yisa Braimah has advocated for a power shift to either Owan or Akoko Edo in 2023 so as to give all the people of the senatorial district a sense of belonging.

Speaking with journalists at his country home in Ihievbe, Owan East local government area as part of activities to mark his 79th birthday, Senator Braimah, the Seriki Muslumi of Afenmailand and top member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) decried the continued marginalisation of Owan and Akoko Edo people within Edo North senatorial district.

He insisted that such political shift will help in assuaging the disaffection of the majority of the people of Owan East, Owan West and Akoko Edo local government areas over perceived and real dominance by the three Etsako local government areas of East, Central and West.

The former Senator who served between 2003 and 2007 appealed to Deputy Governor Philip Shuaibu and the Etsako speaking people in the senatorial district to concede the plum senatorial seat in 2023 to either the Owans or the Akoko Edos.

He further expressed displeasure with the reality that a good number of the people of Edo North Senatorial District feel disenchanted with how the areas have been schemed out of the political equation in the state.

The senator who holds the record of being the first person from the Owan axis of the district to represent the Edo North district remarked that the Estako people have by design deliberately dominated the Senatorial seat for over 25 cumulative years out of the last 35 years and still counting.

He, however, noted that the unprecedented 12 years of loyalty and support of the Owan/Akoko Edo people to former Governor Adams Oshiomhole and deputy Governor Shaibu, both Etsako sons, needed to be reciprocated by conceding the 2023 Senate seat to them.

Going down memory lane, starting from the late ’60s, Braimah disclosed that Etsako people have held sway in the area starting with Senator Ekpomoriri Lamai of the First Republic to Second Republic Senators John Umolu and Franca Afegbua to former Senate Deputy President Albert Legbojie, Victor Oyofo and incumbent Francis Alimikhena.

“The Edo North district is made up of six local government areas with Etsakos occupying three, Owan two and Akoko-Edo one. The Etsakos have a 44 per cent voters population advantage to the Owans 26per cent and the Akoko Edos 25per cent of the voters’ population,” he said.

Senator Braimah advised Etsako people to opt for a candidate from the Owan axis due to the utter and highly dismal performance of Senator Alimikhena, an Etsako indigene who voted against the Electronic Transmission of Election Results in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) amendment bill.

He added: “Senator Alimikhena disgraceful act makes it more imperative for the Etsakos to concede the Senate seat to the minority people of Owan/Akoko Edo once again.”
