Communal crisis: Benue govt orders regular security patrol on crisis areas

Following the incessant crises between Bonta and Ukpute communities in Konshisha and Oju Local Government Areas of Benue State over land, the state government has directed that the access road linking the communities be opened.

In a communique issued at the end of the Special Security Council meeting held at the new banquet hall of the government house, Makurdi yesterday also called for regular security patrol on the road linking the communities.

The State Governor, Samuel Ortom who read the communique said that the meeting condemned the criminality among the youths of both communities and called for a cessation of hostilities as well as asking that erring members from the communities be disciplined and sanctioned.

The meeting called for constant hosting of stakeholders meetings involving the communities and directed urgent demarcation of borders of Bonta and Ukpute communities in Konshisha and Oju Local Government Areas respectively.

That the two local government areas should provide enabling environment for the establishment of police posts within the area to serve the two communities.

The meeting directed that traditional rulers from the areas should sit up and take full charge of their domains.

The meeting also called on youths of the areas to collaborate with traditional rulers and security agencies to fish out criminal elements among them so as to pave the way for sustainable peace in the areas.

They also called on faith-based organizations to encourage the communities on the need for peaceful coexistence.
