Commercial flight to resume in Benue

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Nigeria Meteorological Agency in collaboration with the Nigeria Airforce, on Monday, signed a Memoranda of Understanding to commence civil flight operation in Benue State.

The Representative of MD/CEO of FAAN, Clifford Mozeghian, stated that FAAN was passionate about the opening of Makurdi aero drone for civil flight operation, saying that it had become a reality.

He explained that when operation commences, FAAN will be responsible for maintenance of equipment of the aerodrone, adding that medical, relief materials electoral materials amongst others will be airlifted to the state.

“The airport will serve as a catalyst for the development of the state, assuring that the agency will work assiduously to meet the contractual obligations for Benue people and its environs,” he said.

Also, representative of Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal James Gwani, who is the Air officer Training and Operation of Nigeria Airforce, said that the agreement with the various agencies to commence flight for Benue people was part of the military corporate social responsibility and maintenance of civil relationship with her host community.

“This will manifest in the social and economic life of the people. We will ensure unhindered flights in and out of Makurdi. We ensure safe flight in partnership with FAAN and NIMET,” AVM Gwani promised.

In his remarks, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State said that the State for a long time had been deleted from the map of the country because there was no flight operation.

He said the nature of roads and insecurity in the state and the country had made air travel relatively secure.

“We have been denied the privilege of people who should have added value to us. That is why we are not taking this for granted. Several value addition would be gained by our communities and the economy of our people will improve. We will also, collaborate with the Navy to establish sea transport in the state,” Ortom said.
