College of Health Tech workers call off strike

Published by

Workers of the College of Health Technology, Calabar, Cross River State, have called off the 56 days industrial action which started on December 1, 2020.

Announcing the suspension in a bulletin christened “Bulletin 4”, leaders of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnic (SSANIP) of the institution, said they reached an agreement with government of Cross River State.

The JAC chairman, Asuquo Ekpo said that “government, after a closed door session with both unions approved 50 per cent of the balance of the disputed Conpcass and Contediss salary structures payable to staff of CRS College of Health Technology, Calabar would be added and paid from November 2020 and the balance added subsequently.

“We hereby suspend the 56 days strike action. Members are therefore asked to resume work from Tuesday January 26, with the belief that the government will keep to its end of the MoU”, he announced.”

While speaking, the ASUP’s chairman, Bright Ewona confirmed the development, adding that “the governor called us for a roundtable conversation and because we are more interested in developing our state, we have called off the strike to allow students return to school.”

Speaking to Nigerian Tribune, chairman of SSANIP, Effanga Archibong noted that “the union has decided to work with the 50 per cent proposed by the governor for now, and we await the governor in keeping to his side of the bargain.”

The institutions’ Students Union Government (SUG), Comrade Chima Kedemit, it will be recalled had met with the governor to express students frustrations concerning the unending strike action.

Kedemit had written a letter to Governor Ben Ayade threatening a protest and called on government intervention to put an end to the industrial action.

Nigerian Tribune further gathered that the unions had protested for being delisted from the nationally approved Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) and the Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS) by the Governor Ayade-led administration.
