Published by

Eight street urchins, popularly called Almajiris, were killed last weekend by clay they were mining when the heap of clay reportedly caved in on them, burying them alive before they could be rescued.

The tragedy occurred as the Almajiris, who are Islamic pupils studying the Qur’an under a popular Islamic cleric, Malam Dan-Umma, in the Badariya area, a suburb of Birnin Kebbi, the State Capital,.

The unfortunate incident also led to the hospitalisation of two other Almajiris, who are now receiving treatment for injuries sustained.

The deceased pupils and those injured were reported to be mining clay at Dukku Hill when it caved in and trapped them.

However, the Governor of the State, Comrade Nasir Idris, who is on an official trip abroad, sent a high-powered delegation comprising Commissioners and Special Advisers led by the Head of Service, Alhaji Safiyanu Garba Bena, to condole with the families of the departed.

He also provided financial support, doling out the sum of N20 million to the Malam and the families of the deceased.
