Bye-election: Court remands three suspected killers of Ekiti voters

Published by

The Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has remanded in prison three suspects arrested in connection with the killings of voters during the last Saturday’s House of Assembly bye-election for Ekiti East constituency 1.

During the poll last Saturday, three persons were shot dead by political thugs at a polling unit in Omuo-Ekiti.

The defendants include; Adenijo Olusola(38) popularly called Solar, Paul Folorunso(45 ) and Adebayo Serifat(40)

The three suspects were charged for alleged conspiracy and murder.

The police counsel, ASP Martins Akala, sought the order of the court to grant the prayer of the State Commissioner of Police, Tunde Mobayo as contained in the request before the court to prosecute the case.

However, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mr Julius Ajibare, disagreed with the police counsel noted that the state has the right to take over any case in court.

According to him, ” Sections 26 Sub-Section L of the Administration of Criminal Justice Rules 2020 and Section 211 of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, which empowers the State to take over any criminal matter at any stage before the judgement is pronounced.”

Aside from the killings of the three voters, the defendants were also alleged of attempted to murder Woman Sergeant Bukola Olawoye, Akanle Oluwadare, (m) Tosin Adeniyi (f) and Omolola Emmanuel (m).

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Section 516, 319(1) and 320 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The Chief Magistrate Court, Mr Abdulhamid Lawal, consequently, ordered the remand of the defendants at the correctional facility pending issuance of legal advice from the DPP.

He adjourned the case until April 19 for mention.
