Burnt train coaches at Offa not Lagos-Kano bound passenger train ― NRC

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Western District, has said that the train coaches involved in a recent fire incident in Offa, Kwara State, were not that of the Lagos-Kano bound passenger train as being reported in some section of the media.

According to a statement signed by Isah Salami, on behalf of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Western District, a copy of which was made available to Tribune Online on Wednesday, noted that the coaches involved in the fire incident were empty coaches marshaled out of Offa yard station which has been scheduled for complete rehabilitation before the unfortunate incident.

The statement held that: “The Lagos-Kano passenger train officially departs Lagos every Friday at noon, hence, it is total that the said train coaches were involved in the fire accident. Nigerian Railway Corporation management would like to use this medium to allay the fears of our esteem passengers or their relatives of any fire accident involving our coaches.

“In as much as we appreciate the positive publication accorded the NRC’s activities on our train operations, we are appealing to journalists to please always crosscheck their information with relevant Railway officials before going to the press.”

The NRC expressed gratitude to the Kwara State Fire Service for their quick intervention in putting out the fire that engulfed the coaches awaiting rehabilitation at Offa Railway Station.

The Corporation concluded that: “We are warning miscreants to keep away from Railway premises especially using our properties for their nefarious activities, anybody caught by the security agents will face the full wrath of the extant law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
