The Proprietor/Chief Executive Officer, Blooming Greens School, Mrs Susan Babatunde-Yamah and the Concerned Parents and Educators have called for good parenting to nix the issue of bullying in both homes and schools.
Speaking at the Xmas Carol of the school yesterday in Lagos, Mrs. Susan said bullying is a product of the first stage of socialization because it is where the moral values are being infused into the child by actions and inactions.
Babatunde-Yamah explained that a child would definitely be a bully if his or her parents bully each other at home.
She stated that parents must be intentional, proactive and get involved in the affairs of their children without only striving to turn around the economic situation of the family.
The Educationist advised that parents should listen to their children and stop shutting them up because there is something to pick from whatever they say.
“The first stage of socialization is home and it is very key in nipping the issue of bullying in the bud.
“If parents bully each other at home, there is no way the child won’t pick that up and do same at school.
“So, parents must be intentional, proactive and knowing that they don’t have to wait till it happens.
“You have to be involved. We know that with the economic situation around the world and Nigeria specifically, man and woman have to work to make sure that there is food on the table, pat school bills and other bills.
“But, parents must be involved in the lives of their children. There is no leaving it to the house help or people who are not directly involved.
“They should be open to receive communication from school. We have to work together as one big family-school, community and the child.
“So, get involved with what your child does. Listen to the child. There is no statement they make that is out of the pace because chances are that you will pick something from what the child is saying.” She said.
Speaking also, The Founder, Concerned Parents and Educators (CPE), Yinka Ogunde noted that bullying signifies a much deeper problem with the indices of the bully having a lot of unresolved issues at home.
Mrs. Yinka stated that there is need to have a conversation around it in order to minimize it in homes and schools.
She, therefore, called for a cooperation of government, school and parents to deal with the monster called bullying .
The Education Expert also advised that parents should desist from learning to be a parent by intuition as such approach is obsolete.
“The reason is much simple. Bullying is something that signifies a much deeper problem. It signifies that the child who is the bully has a lot of unresolved issues and he is taking that aggression out to the society.
“The issue of bullying calls for the cooperation of everyone of us-government, school and parents.
“When you track it, it may be from the home. So, we need to have a conversation around it in order to minimize it in our homes and schools.
“Parents should desist from learning to be a parent by intuition as such approach is obsolete.” She said.
