Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former President Goodluck Jonathan have described Bowen University, Iwo, as the pride of the nation in space science education and development.
Osinbajo said this at the commissioning of Virginia Tech. Nigerian Bowen Equatorial Aeronomy Radar (VT-NigerBear), which was held on Friday at the university campus.
He noted that the emergence of Equatorial Aeronomy Radar in Nigeria through Bowen
University would add value to space science research and development in the country.
According to him, the development will go a long way to provide immense technological advantages
that will resolve all the space challenges affecting communication, life and commerce in Nigeria. He
also noted that the success of this project will serve as a template for other high-level research and
scientific collaboration between Nigeria and national partner institutions, by connecting results to
industry and converting data to useful information for commercial and social good projects.

Nigeria is on a super Darn global map. I, therefore, commend the Vice Chancellor of the university,

“I must commend especially the Vice Chancellor Prof. Joshua Ogunwole for his leadership on this project, the Principal Investigator, Dr O.S. Bolaji of UNILAG, and the support of Prof A.B Rabiu of the Centre for Atmospheric Research, a unit of the National Space Research and Development Agency, the partners on this project, Virginia Tech and their very experienced team of scientists.
“And of course, congratulations to this great citadel of learning and research – Bowen University for this amazing achievement and for making us all so proud. Congratulations everyone.”
Speaking in the same vein, in another development, former President Goodluck Jonathan extolled the quality of teaching and research at Bowen university. He expressed satisfaction with the values that Bowen University espouses, which he identified as values of godliness, excellence, innovation entrepreneurship and social responsibility.
He said: “It shows that while Bowen celebrates academic and research excellence and knowledge-driven innovation, it also prioritises character building. This is good because morality, decency, and
honesty are core values of our being. We, therefore, need institutions like Bowen University with strong roots in discipline and morality to produce God-fearing leaders to work for peace and prosperity in our world.”
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Ogunwole, reiterated that his administration has based its operation on the guideline of the vision and mission that established the institution.
Speaking on the Nigerian Bowen Equatorial Aeronomy Radar (VT-NigerBear), established on the Bowen campus, he said: “Some of the benefits of the facility are: Enhancement of the space weather research and improvement of our understanding of the equatorial ionosphere, the attraction of international grants for teaching.”
