Bowen outshines other varsities in computer programming contest

Computer programming students of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, outshone their counterparts drawn from various other universities in the country in the just-concluded Nigerian Collegiate Programming Contest (NCPC), conducted by the National Mathematical Centre, held in Abuja recently.

The outstanding performance of the Bowen University team drawn from the Department of Computer Science and Information qualified them to lead three other universities’ teams to represent Nigeria at Africa and Arab Collegiate Programming Championship slated for November in Egypt.

Three other university teams that qualified for the international competition out of the 13 Nigerian universities that participated in the competition are the Federal University of Technology, Akure, which came second; Babcock University, Ilishan, Ogun State, which took the third position, and Moshood Abiola University of Technology, Abeokuta, which finished fourth.

Tribune Education gathered that the contest was attended and supervised by delegates from the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), delegates from Microsoft, representative of the National Universities Commission (NUC), members of the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, and other experts in Computer Science and Information Technology in Nigeria.

The team coach for Bowen University, Dr Olusegun Lala, stated that this year’s competition is the eighth edition in the country, and that it is open to undergraduate students from diffident universities in the country to interact with one another and to sharpen their algorithm skills.

According to him, the development will go a long way to boost information technology and computer science education in Nigeria, especially among the youths.

Also speaking on the occasion, the coordinator, Computer Science Programme, National Mathematical Centre, Mrs Oluchi Bamidele, declared that the aim of the contest was to discover young talents in computer science and IT in the universities across the country.

The vice chancellor of Bowen University, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, commended the organisers of the programme, and urged them to sustain it.

He said Bowen University is Information Technological-driven, endowed with facilities in terms of human resources, teaching and research aids to impact the students to produce 21st century graduates.
