For over seven years, military and civilian forces have struggled in futility to defend the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Nigeria against Boko Haram. The terrorists seem to be succeeding in consolidating an extreme version of the ‘Islamic State’ in parts of North-East Nigeria.
The war opened a pandora’s box, exposing the deep-seated lapses in the military and civilian leadership in Nigeria and creating a vacuum for Boko Haram insurgents to traumatise both citizens and non-citizens domiciled in some flashpoints in northern Nigeria.
Nigeria is yet to find lasting solutions to the sect’s sinister inclinations due to leadership problems. For example, during military dictatorships, we never had cause to contend with such daredevils as Boko Haram.
There is no way we can combat the unceasing threat posed by Boko Haram threat without a well-calculated strategy that will completely check blood-letting activities.
Also, our leaders should ensure Nigeria’s national security institution are effectively regulated and made accountable to the Nigeria nation.
