This consensus was reached at the end of the Public lecture series with the theme, “Sustainable agriculture as panacea to the herdsmen attacks on arable crop farmers in Nigeria” organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State chapter in Benin City.
In a communique jointly signed by the Chairman and secretary, Comrade Kelvin Okunzuwa and Comrade Gabriel Enogholase respectively on behalf the Correspondents Chapel at the end of the lecture, resolved that rather than cattle colonies, cattle ranching, is the obvious way to go if the crisis is to be sustainably addressed.
It recommended that governments at all levels should provide appropriate infrastructural support to livestock farmers and arable crop farmers as incentives to practice commercial large scale/ sustainable agriculture.
The communique called on the Federal Government through livestock development centres in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as a model of excellence instead of the cattle colony, grazing reserve or estate currently being proposed by the Minister of Agriculture.
