Beyond “I Do”: Discover 5 important health questions to ask before marriage

It is important to know that before you go deep with someone, there are health questions you must ask, or else you want to be ignorant of the reality. Don’t be clouded with feelings for the sake of your future and your unborn children. The important questions shared below should not be overlooked. Yes, so you don’t live the life of “had I known”.

I understand asking some of the questions feels uneasy, but…they are as important as the relationship itself. How do you ask these questions? It’s simple, but there’s no general template for it. You can devise a strategy and be romantic about it.  The end goal is what must not be compromised when inquiring about the following:

1. HIV status

HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. Someone with this virus can easily get sick with other diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis. By now, you ought to have known your HIV status. When you get into a relationship, and you’re asked, don’t be surprised. It is now normalised to prevent any future crisis for your new family. Before you start professing love to that guy or lady, ask, “May I know your status?” Don’t be offensive, but be polite. Above all, ensure the information you have is genuine.

2. Hepatitis

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by viruses. It can lead to serious health problems, primarily liver disease. There are five main types of the virus, referred to as type A, B, C, D, and E. The difference is based on the mode of transmission and depth of the sickness. Hepatitis disease can disrupt your marriage; it is better to know before getting married so that you can plan for the finances. If not, it can lead to death.

3. Genotype

The quest for genotype is quite propagated compared to decades ago. Your genotype is the type of gene you inherited. Genotype is crucial because it will be reflected in your offspring. When your genotype is AA, definitely, you have more options than AS. As an AS, it must be your priority to know if who you like is compatible with you before going further with the relationship.

4. Mental health issues

Mental health is your state of well-being. You will struggle to navigate and cope with life if it is not healthy enough. Mental health is not something you would ask your partner shabbily because it can lead to an unpleasant situation. You have to be very prudent. Notwithstanding, you should go for a test together to clear any doubt.

5. Any chronic disease

Another important health question you should be comfortable asking your partner is if he or she is nursing any chronic disease such as diabetes, cancer or heart disease. It is important you know before going ahead with the marriage. You just have to be sincere so your partner won’t feel disappointed.
