The new Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police in charge of Zone One, Mr Kayode Aderanti, has read a Riot Act to officers and men of the police commands in Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states against illegal detention and intimidation of suspects.
According to him, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris-led police force was against illegal detention of people, just as he noted that the police high command would not hesitate to discipline any officers found wanting in this regard.
Making the assertion on Tuesday during an interactive session with reporters in his office, Mr Aderanti also tasked his men and officers on the need for speedy treatment of case files, investigations and prosecution so as to facilitate the process of justice.
“Effective community policing is a collective responsibility of every citizen,” the AIG stated, adding that he would partner with the emirate’s council, religious leaders and other stakeholders to ensure that useful information were given to the zone, which would assist in nipping the criminal intents of all shady characters in the bud.
According to Aderanti, “I am against illegal detention. The Inspector General of Police who I represent in this zone is against it; and illegal detention is against the police policy. No Nigerian should be detained illegally.”
He reiterated the bail-is-free policy of the Nigeria Police Force, warning that under no guise should policemen collect money from suspects in the name of bail.
