Benue govt receives over 78 impounded motorcycles from troops

Published by

Benue State government on Saturday received over 78 impounded motorcycles impounded by troops of Operation Whirl Stroke.

It would be recalled that the State Security Council had placed a ban on the use of motorcycles in Ukum and Katsina-Alla local government areas of Sankera axis following an increasing spate of violence in the areas in recent times.

Though, the State Governor, Samuel Ortom has said that the State Security Council would soon meet to review the ban.

The impounded motorcycles were handed over by the Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Adeyemi Yekini.

The Security Adviser, Lt. Col. Paul Hemba retd who received the motorcycles on behalf of the governor, Samuel Ortom said that the motorcycles were impounded by troops of Operation Whirl Stroke for flouting the directives.

Hemba said that the state security council decided to ban the use of motorcycles in the affected council areas due to the increase in criminal activities in the area.

“You are here to witness the hand over of seized motorcycles from Katsina-Ala and Ukum. 78 motorcycles were handed over to the state government by Commander, OPWS. They are part of motorcycles arrested from Sankera axis.

“As we are all aware, motorcycles are a major source of criminal activities across the country. That was why the security council arrived at the decision after x-raying the activities of bandits in the area which culminated in the recent attack on the council chairman of Katsina-Ala.

“Some of the impounded motorcycles belong to bandits while some also belong to other people who flouted the ban order of the state government.

When asked about allegation of the burning of impounded motorcycles by the military, Hemba said the allegation might be an isolated incidence and could be propaganda by bandits to discredit OPWS.

“No matter the blackmail, we will not stop pursuing them the blackmail is intended to discourage the security agencies but we will not stop.

He said traditional rulers and other stakeholders in the area have appealed to the state government for ladies machines to be excluded adding that the security council will meet to ratify the appeal soon.
