Be fully involved in your children’s academic activities, parents told

Parents have been charged to be fully involved in every aspect of their children’s academic activities so that they can record good performance in their academics.

Dr Olatunji Oladunni made the observation while speaking as a guest speaker at the maiden edition of a talk show organised by Grace-Field College, Soka, Ibadan recently, entitled “Factors that Hinder Good Academic Performance of Students.”

He observed that children who live with both of their parents get better grades than children who don’t, adding that family conflict and disruption could result in poor academic performance in students.

He identified quite a number of parental habits such as, not showing interest in the child’s learning material; not inquiring about the child’s day, not having listening ear, not assisting with specific task or skill taught at child’s school, not encouraging the child to complete home-work or study for test, not attending parents-teacher’s meeting\open day, among others as factors indirectly hindering the performance of some students.

While he encouraged teachers to employ and engage different teaching methods in the classroom, he said: “students are more likely to retain their motivation in education if educators use different learning methods that create diversity and prevent them from being bored while teaching in the classroom.”

“Students in a single class are likely to have different styles of learning. Thus, teacher is more likely to meet these needs by applying different teaching method. Involvement in extracurricular activities or support from a tutor can help in good academic performance of students,” he added.

He also identified kindness, optimism, positive feedback and encouragement on the part of teachers as factors that can positively affect students’ academic performance.

The proprietress of the school, Mrs Alaba Olufunke Aremu, in her welcome address, stated that the Grace-Field College was established for the purpose of raising young minds for future impact.

While speaking on the rationale for organising a talk show in the school, she noted it was in a bid to help students improve on their academic performance, as well as to develop the confidence to speak and build good human relationship skills.

In her remarks, the principal of the school, Mrs Oluwatosin Ogunremi, said it was worth the effort putting the maiden edition of the speaking competition among schools together this year she said “we have noticed that the students are lacking some qualities in this regard and we decided to equip them adequately, hence the reason for creating a platform through the speaking contest.”

She encouraged parents to always show interest in whatever their children are doing in school, assist in the discovery of their gifting and invest in them.

At the end of the competition, the High Tower Group of Schools Sanyo, Ibadan came third, while The Gracious Offspring College, Soka, Ibadan took second position and  the host school, Grace-Field College, took the first position respectively.
