Bayelsa/Kogi polls: We’re watching you, US tells politicians

Individuals who may interfere or instigate violence in the Saturday’s gubernatorial elections in Bayelsa and Kogi States may face repercussions from world powers given the warning handed down by the United States on Thursday.

A US Embassy statement in Abuja affirmed that America and other democratic nations of the world will be paying close attention to the elections because of its importance not just only to Nigeria but the African continent.

It said the US does not support any particular candidates in the elections but the democratic process itself as it wants to see a free, fair, peaceful and transparent exercise.

The statement read: “The conduct of the upcoming bi-elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states is important not only for Nigeria but for the African continent.

“The United States Government does not support any specific candidate or party in any Nigerian election.

“The United States supports the Nigerian democratic process itself. We support a genuinely free, fair, transparent, and peaceful electoral process.

“We and other democratic nations will be paying close attention to the actions of individuals who interfere in the democratic process or instigate violence against the civilian population before, during, or after the elections.”
