In continuation of the Kaura Economic Empowerment Programme (KEEP) aimed at reducing poverty and creating employment among youths and women across Bauchi State, 1000 beneficiaries of the programme in Bogoro and Tafawa Balewa LGAs have been equipped.
The beneficiaries were handed the empowerment facilities which included Motorcycles, Grinding Machines, sewing machines, makeup kits, shoe making machines among others as well as cash to enable them to start off the businesses.
While Flagging off the Programme in Bogoro and Tafawa Balewa local government areas of the state, on Monday, State Governor, Sen Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, said that the economic programme had earlier been launched in Zaki, Gamawa, Ganjuwa, Darazo local government areas.
The governor pointed out that the programme is a deliberate effort by the government to holistically address the problem of unemployment and poverty in the state, especially among youths and women.
Bala Mohammed further said that as a responsive and responsible government, it is not unmindful of the economic hardship experienced by the majority of the people of the state, adding that it has taken it upon itself to address the hardship with all seriousness.
He said that “Under this programme, a total of 1,000 tricycles also known as Keke Napep have been distributed to Okada riders popularly called Achaba, as soft loans. It is a revolving loan with an open repayment so that other sets of Achaba riders will benefit from it.”
The governor added that, “I am very happy to say that the programme is very successful and we have no default in terms of payment and very soon, we will give another set of 1,000 tricycles by the grace of God.
154 buses have been procured and distributed to members of the public as a self revolving loan. I am happy to note that commuters are using these buses across the state and country.”
According to him, “The package of the Kaura Economic Empowerment Programme been launched today is not different from the other four LGAs where the programme was earlier launched.”
“The items distributed to the beneficiaries will include N50,000 cash for 500 persons per LGA, three motorcycles for each of the wards of the LGAs and N100,000 cash to be given to women and youth leaders in each local government area, while buses will be given to each LGAs,” he said.
In his welcome address, the Executive Chairman of Bogoro LGA, Iliya Habila, commended the state government initiative of empowering residents in the state in order to improve their standard of living.
He said that the unprecedented developmental strides recorded in the state are due to the conscious decision of the government to ensure fairness, justice and service delivery.
Iliya Habila also said that the people of the local government have benefited immensely from various developmental projects which include the Mallar-Lusa-Bogoro and Boi-Tapshin road project, rehabilitation of the water scheme amongst others just as he thanked the governor for alleviating the plight of people when flood ravaged the area.
The Council Chairman then assured that people of the area will remain supportive of the PDP led administration no matter the provocation by the opposition to lure them away saying, “Bogoro LGA belongs to PDP and nobody can change that.”
The Kaura Economic Empowerment Programme (KEEP) is an initiative of the Bauchi State government to empower women and youths with incentives that will alleviate poverty and provide them with job opportunities in the state.
The governor had earlier while in Dajin village expressed worries over the lack of infrastructure which is hindering effective teaching and learning and directed that blocks of classrooms should be constructed in the community.
The governor who gave the directive, on Monday, while on a working visit to the area, further directed that by the time he goes back in the next two weeks, significant progress must have been made on the project.
Bala Mohammed said that the action became necessary in order to discourage teaching and learning as well as the provision of educational activities under the tree in the area.
Bala Mohammed who made this known while inspecting the unfavourable condition of teaching and learning in the area said that the project must commence and make significant progress within two weeks time.
He also informed the community that the state government has included the area in the proposed rural road construction across the state when the state secures a World Bank Intervention for Rural Community Development.
The governor further assured that his administration is more than ever before determined to improve the quality of lives of people in both urban and rural areas.
One of the community leaders, Bala Maihoto Dajin who spoke to the governor noted that lack of educational infrastructure is the main reason discouraging the enrollment of children into schools in the area.
He, however, commended the governor for the commitment to revamping the education sector of the state and promised to support the government at all times.
Others who spoke during the brief occasion commended the governor for the opening up of rural areas of the state saying that with such, the state will soon join the league of developed states in the country.
