Bauchi: Don’t take majority status for granted, ex-Speaker warns PDP administration

The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which is in power in Bauchi state, has been cautioned not to take for granted its majority members in the 10th Assembly.

The caution was given by the Speaker of the 8th Assembly of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Kawuwa Shehu Damina, during the valedictory plenary session of the 9th Assembly.

According to Speaker Kawuwa Shehu Damina, the ruling party should not consider their majority in the 10th Assembly as a blessing without taking caution.

He emphasized that if care is not taken, it could be a setback for the government. He compared it to the scepticism that existed in the 9th Assembly, where both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and PDP members, as well as the government, were sceptical about everything.

Kawuwa Shehu Damina, who represents the Darazo Constituency, expressed gratitude to Allah for the opportunity to serve the people and the state. He thanked his colleagues, staff, security agents, and the people of his constituency for electing him for two terms.

He appealed to the Clerk of the House, staff, and returning members to assist the incoming ones in capacity building.

The former Speaker also called on the Clerk to engage in training and retraining of staff, suggesting that NGOs could assist in capacity building and training. He advised members of Committees in the 10th Assembly to intensify oversight functions, emphasizing the importance of their work at the committee level.

Kawuwa Damina advised the Speaker, Abubakar Sulaiman, who is expected to be reelected, to learn from his mistakes and use his experience effectively. He stressed that what could be pardoned in his first term may not be forgiven in the second term. He also urged the Speaker to ensure the development of the incoming members.

Other members of the 9th Assembly expressed their gratitude to Allah, their constituents, and their colleagues for the opportunity to serve. They asked for forgiveness for any mistakes or shortcomings and extended their best wishes to the non-returning members.

The Speaker countered a claim made by one member, Gazali Abubakar Wunti, stating that many motions moved in the House were implemented by the government. He cited examples of projects executed after the House moved motions, such as the construction of roads in Ningi.

The valedictory session marked the end of the sitting of the 9th Assembly, with the official end of their tenure scheduled for June 19, 2023. The plenary was adjourned sine die as moved by the Majority Leader and seconded by the Minority Leader.
