The Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) is set to develop a framework for sustainable graveyard management across the state.
This was made known on Tuesday when the Director General of the Agency, Dr Ibrahim Kabir, led officials and other officers of the agency to an evaluation exercise at the Bauchi Muslim main graveyard, Dungulbi, along Bauchi-Gombe Road.
Ibrahim Kabir said that it is the responsibility of his agency to ensure cleanliness throughout the state, including the graveyards, saying that BASEPA has been intervening in fumigating the new and old graveyards to ensure control over the overgrown grasses.
According to him, the framework will provide lasting and sustainable solutions to the menace of overgrown grasses that are seriously affecting our graveyards in the state by collaborating with religious organisations such as JNI and JIBWIS, among others.
The framework will consider the establishment of a graveyard management committee that will be saddled with the responsibility of ensuring cleanliness at the graveyard, the provision of working tools, routine cleaning and fumigation exercises, and the appointment of a desk officer in that regard.
Recall that the agency earlier this year intervened at the old graveyards of Fadaman Mada, where the Director General donated knapsack sprayer machines and chemicals to the Zauren Sulhu Committee of Fadaman Mada Unit C and organised a fumigation training with the view of providing lasting solutions to the issue of overgrown grasses at the graveyard, as contained in a statement by Isyaka Laminu Badamasi, SA Media, to DG BASEPA.
