Bayelsa: Police teargas women as they protest removal of CP

A group of protesting women dressed in black have been tear-gassed by the police in Yenagoa. They were protesting for the removal of the Commissioner of Police, Tolani Alausa on Friday.

According to reliable sources, their aim was to counter an earlier protest by a group called ‘Concerned Bayelsans’ who took to the street in support of the CP.

The ‘Concerned Bayelsans’ protest was led by Preye Agama, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in the state and were armed with placards, some of which read, “With You we are safe, thank you”
“IG thank You for Returning Bayelsa Commissioner of Police”.

Speaking with the media, Agama disclosed that they were in support of the Inspector General of Police for bringing back the Commissioner of Police, Tolani Alausa who was rumoured to have been redeployed to the force headquarters.

He confessed that the government is angry with the CP because he has given Bayelsans a level playing field to conduct free and fair elections.

In an unexpected turn of events, hundreds of women dressed in black attire marched to the state police command, demanding the removal of the CP.

In response to their protest, police operatives opened fire on the placards and women carrying green leaves chanting, “We need peace, CP must go”, “Stop aiding them to shoot at our people”, “Bayelsa, we need peace, we say no to corruption.”
