Awolowo was consistent, purposeful ― Ooni

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi has described the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as someone who was consistent and purposeful.

Ooni, who was represented by Alara of Araoodaye, Oba Adesegun Layade, made this known at the public presentation/launch of the book, Awolowo Akinkanju Asiwaju by Lagada Abayomi Olanrewaju, on Thursday in Lagos.

Meanwhile, the traditional ruler noted that the Yoruba language is going into extinction because people don’t want to associate themselves with it without the knowledge of the fact that it is easier to learn and comprehend in one’s own language.

“Awolowo was consistent and purposeful. He follows his beliefs with impeccable steadfastness. You could not fault him.

“He knew what he wanted in life, went for it and stood by it.

“I am particularly impressed with our language – the Yoruba language that is purposefully energized here.

“We are losing it. You pride yourself that you can speak English and other languages but you cannot speak yours.

“It is easier to learn and comprehend in your own language. And when you lose your culture.

“The way they took us into slavery and they are still taking us into slavery is because we refused to respect our culture.

“If you don’t know who you are, how would you become anything in life. We have lost our roots and that is why we are here.”

Speaking also, the Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Hon. Setonji eulogized free education instituted by the late Awolowo he enjoyed at all levels in Lagos State.

Setonji described the late sage as a great leader, adding that he would always be associated with him in all ramifications.

The lawmaker noted that he adores his laudable vision for Nigeria, Western Nigeria and the Yoruba race.

“I enjoyed the privilege of free education at all levels in Lagos State because of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“Where we are today is the product of what people like Awolowo had done.

“Awolowo was a great man and that is why I want to be associated with anything that comes from him.

“I adored him for his vision for Nigeria, Western Region and Yoruba race,” he said.
