AWDROP to begin data collection of drilled boreholes across Nigeria

IN a bid to have acceptable and proper national well water (borehole) records in the country, the Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP), would henceforth mandate all registered members across Nigeria to keep records of all boreholes drilled at every point in time.

This move was part of the resolution made at the recently concluded annual conference of the association held at Ilaji Hotels and Resorts, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

In a communique jointly signed by the President and Secretary of the association, Micheal Ale and Yomi Adeyemi respectively, a copy of which was made available to the Nigerian Tribune, AWDROP noted that the data gathering would be done through the adoption of digital application and transit same real-time to the association’s dashboard in collaboration with the national and state water resources agencies in order to assist in groundwater resources development and policy enactment.

On borehole validation, AWDROP noted that all borehole projects from respective actors (development agencies, government at all levels and private organisations) should involve the engagement of experienced and licensed borehole experts, stating that any personnel playing a supervisory role should be a government licensed and Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) registered professional while overriding validation of all boreholes must be done by skilled and registered AWDROP members.

The association also resolved that: “To better professionalised borehole drilling and abstraction of groundwater in Nigeria, ‘Borehole drilling and groundwater development’ should be input into Geosciences Curriculum through National University Commission (NUC) in all our tertiary institutions. Also, the Federal Government through TETFUND should procure drilling rig equipment for all Geology departments in tertiary institutions to enhance the training of young geoscientists.”

In the area of collaboration, AWDROP said: “As an organisation, our association shall collaborate and partner with governments at all levels in order to establish National Water Supply Incidence Management Team (NWSIMT) with the sole aim of restoring, rehabilitate and rejuvenate all dysfunctional boreholes facilities in endemic areas in Nigeria, in order to prevent the spread of cholera and other waterborne diseases in Nigeria.”
