In a bid to preserve and promote Yoruba culture, ATELEWO Cultural Initiative is set to host a Yoruba party in celebration of the Yoruba New Year. The event is scheduled for Sunday, July 7, 2024, at the Racecourse in Adamasingba, Ibadan.
The Yoruba Party promises to be a highlight of the Yoruba calendar, offering attendees a rich tapestry of traditional Yoruba music, fashion, food, and interactive cultural activities.
Participants will be treated to a day of joyous celebration, with competitions and quizzes designed to test their knowledge of Yoruba culture and history.
To add to the festive atmosphere, the event will be themed around Yoruba cultural dress, encouraging guests to showcase both traditional and contemporary Yoruba attire.
Ayo Adams, a co-convener of the event, emphasised the inclusivity of the event.
“This event is open to everyone. We invite all to join us in experiencing the beauty of Yoruba culture, from its music and dance to its fashion and food.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to engage with and celebrate the Yoruba New Year in a lively, communal setting. The Party is designed not just for fun but also as a learning experience about our culture.”
“The Yoruba Party is more than just a celebration; it’s an essential effort to sustain and grow our cultural heritage,” said Ibrahim Oredola, Co-Convener and Co-Founder of ATELEWO Cultural Initiative.
“One of the main objectives of this event is to draw Yoruba people’s consciousness to the fact that Yoruba has its own new year, separate from the Gregorian calendar.
“This calendar, called Kojoda, is a crucial aspect of our cultural identity that we must not lose. It helps reinforce who we are and what we stand for as a people.
By bringing people together to celebrate and learn about Yoruba traditions, we hope to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of our rich cultural legacy.”
ATELEWO Cultural Initiative has been at the forefront of efforts to revive and promote Yoruba culture and language since its inception. This event marks a significant step in their mission to preserve and enhance the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.
The Yoruba Party is particularly aimed at Millennials and Gen Zs, who, despite often being distanced from their cultural legacies, are increasingly showing interest in exploring their roots.
The Yoruba Party is expected to attract a diverse audience eager to immerse themselves in the traditions of the Yoruba people.
The event promises an exciting blend of traditional entertainment and cultural education, ensuring a memorable experience for all who attend.
