The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, on Tuesday, appealed to Nigerians to assist the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) to achieve effective policing.
The traditional ruler who made the call while receiving the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone XI, Olasupo Ajani, in his palace, however, charged the government to fund the force in salary increment, logistics procurements, enlistment of more police officers among others.
He also urged citizen to stop intimidating the force with attacks.
He condemned the various attacks on police officers and their structures as an invitation to anarchy, saying no facet of a nation’s strength is guaranteed in an unfriendly environment with security operatives.
He said the frequent harassments and intimidations of the security men could jeopardize economic stability and appealed to Nigerians to have a rethink the actions against security officers.
“The spate of attacks on security men and their structures is condemnable. It is a red pointer to anarchy when civilians muster to attack police and destroy their stations.
“It is incredible, the police cannot freely boast of their profession. Many police are afraid to wear uniforms. They have been reduced to nothing. The right time to right the wrong is now. Government should not continue to watch Nigeria moving to an anarchy state.
“I urge the government to consider recruiting more youths into security jobs. The salary of security operatives must also be increased.
“Security of lives and properties is the primary responsibility of the government. This, at all cost, must be strengthened by the traditional institution. The police are hereby assured of my support, always.”
