Assault on AIT reporter: Bauchi police condemns act, disband RRS

Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Sylvester Alabi has condemned the assault on the reporter of AIT in Bauchi, Damina Nagari but yet to be identified men of the Command Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in the cause of covering a protest by students of College of Agriculture, Yelwa Bauchi on Thursday. 

In a statement signed by the PPRO, SP Ahmed Wakili the Commissioner condemned in totality, the violence that trailed protest by students of the College of Agriculture in the State. 

The statement reads, “The Command has totally condemned the unprofessional conduct of the RRS on this and the Commissioner has ordered for full payment of the medical bills of Damina as well as payment of all that was lost during the protest, set three-man committee to investigate the earring Police officers, he equally ordered for the disbandment of the present squad, fresh officers with good track records will replace them”.

It further contained that, “The Command is ever ready to engage the NUJ members to sheath their sword as protest is not a solution to the present situation.

“It will be recalled that that on 29/07/2021 at about 1230hrs students of the College of Agriculture, Bauchi State trooped out of their school premises and barricaded Bauchi-Dass federal highway, in protest over a land dispute that was formerly used by the institution as its plot for practicals as a result of a court judgement dated 26th March, 2021, which ruled in favour of the plaintiff, Yusuf Ibrahim. 

“The protest by the students which was aimed at disrupting the plaintiff from partitioning the land after obtaining a restraining order degenerated to a violent demonstration which involved; burning of tyres, smashing peoples’ vehicles, damaging properties, extortion of mobile phones and looting some shops situated opposite the school. 

“A police team attached to E’ Division which rushed to the scene and tried to appeal to the students’ leader, yielded no positive result as the students started throwing stones and other dangerous objects at the Police team which led to a serious injury on one Police officer, the violent protesters were eventually dispersed and normalcy was restored.”

The Command through the statement stated that, “To that end, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Sylvester Alabi wish to inform the general public that no form of violent demonstration or unlawful gathering will be tolerated.” 

He has consequently re-echoed his order to officers and men of the Command to intensify efforts in resisting and curtailing any act of lawlessness, oppression or intimidation from any group of persons and warned officers to be professional while discharging their duties.

“Investigation into the circumstances surrounding the protest has begun, the Command, therefore, wishes to urge law abiding citizens of Bauchi not to panic but go about their normal businesses and stay away from all forms of criminality.”
