Two factional chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have emerged in Bauchi State during the party’s congress which took place on Saturday.
The development is similar to events of 2019 which made the APC lose the gubernatorial election to the PDP.
In one of the congresses supervised by the Jibrin Sam-led committee from the National Secretariat of the APC, Alhaji Babayo Misau emerged as the chairman just as Sunusi Kunde was declared state chairman on Saturday at about 8 pm.
Both Misau and Kunde emerged chairmen of APC alongside 35 members of the state executive through a consensus that took place between Saturday and Sunday.
Chairman of the state congress committee who earlier on Saturday promised that results will be declared on Monday to allow for dialogue and further discussions, turned around at about 1 am on Sunday to say that the Misau-led officials were elected by delegates and stakeholders of the party in the state.
He further said that the committee was mandated by the APC National Secretariat to conduct a free and fair congress in the state saying, “we give the opportunity to stakeholders of each local government area and their zones to elect the state executives without rancour. We are therefore affirming the elected officials according to the party guidelines and policies of the party.”
Sam also explained that the committee did not interfere in the decision of stakeholders during the election process, stressing that the party was committed to bringing in leaders that can work assiduously to wrestle power from the PDP government.
According to him, “Bauchi State belongs to APC and come 2023, the state will go back to the party.”
The member representing Alkaleri-Kirfi Federal constituency at the National Assembly, Mr Musa Pali, commended the committee, saying the congress was conducted peacefully under the supervision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies as well as journalists.
Meanwhile, at the Zaranda Hotel parallel congress, the delegates through consensus elected Kunde as APC state chairman, claiming that the congress was the authentic one recognized by the National Secretariat of the party.
Kunde, in his acceptance speech, commended the doggedness of the delegates, assuring that his leadership will be all-encompassing and open to all members. He also stressed that his focus is how to reposition the party and win back the state come 2023 general elections.
