John James Akpanudoedehe
Ahead the next general elections, the All Progressives Congress Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, (CECPC) said it was not its business to unveil the zoning arrangement for elective offices for the party.
National Secretary of the CECPC, Senator John Akpanudoedehe made the clarification in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.
A list purportedly emanating from the National Working Committee of the party had zoned the 2023 Presidential ticket of the ruling party to the North while the South will produce the Vice Presidential candidate.
The list also allocated the position of national chairman and national secretary of the party to the North and South, respectively in the national convention slated for June.
Senator Akpanudoedehe however said no decision has been taken on the zoning of the party and elective offices.
He maintained that the assignment before the 13 -man Committee led by Yobe state governor, Mallam Mai Mala Buni was conduct of a successful membership registration and revalidation exercise and the national convention.
The national secretary of the CECPC said no decision can be taken on zoning without the input of the leader of the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari, the serving governors and other critical stakeholders.
He said, “People who are interested in running for one office or the other can speculate. As far as I am concerned, the last Caretaker Committee meeting we had, we did not discuss that. That is not what we are concerned with now, what we are concerned with is data collection, how to collect data without making mistake.
“We are not going to be pressurized by sentiment and we do the wrong thing. Let me say that zoning is not for the Caretaker Committee alone. It has to do with the President, it has to do with other major stakeholders, it has to do with a lot of people.
I want to mute the speculation. The list is not from us (Caretaker Committee). The President is not in town. There is no way such decision will be taken without consulting with the President, consult with the governors and other major stakeholders.
People should disregard the list. We are focused on delivering our mandate and we are to do it rightly.”
