Anambra hires 60 midwives as ad-hoc staff to aide health service delivery

Anambra State Government has hired about 60 midwives as ad-hoc staff to aide health service delivery across Public Health Centres (PHC), in the state.

The Executive Secretary, Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency ASPHCDA, Dr Chioma Ezenyimulu, disclosed this at the one-day Stakeholders round table discussion on Family Planning Awareness Campaign, organized by THE CHALLENGE INITIATIVE (TCI), in Awka, on Tuesday.

Dr Ezenyimulu, who was represented at the event by the Director of Community Health in the Agency, Dr Frank Umeh, said that the sixty Midwives recruited as ad-hoc staff were trained and certified Nurses from reputable health institutions.

According to her, 60 of them, out of 700 that applied for the job might later be absorbed as full staff, depending on their commitment and dedication, adding that they had been deployed to all the Primary Health Care Centres in the State.

While commending The Challenge Initiative (TCI), on their efforts in educating the society on the importance of Family planning, she said the ASPHCDA, Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA) and the State Ministry of Health were the three key players in the recruitment process.

She also expressed gratitude to the State governor, Willie Obiano, for ensuring that Anambra State qualified for the BHCPF and for always making health a priority in his administration.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala, represented by the Director of Public Health and Disease Control in the Ministry of Health, Dr Uchechukwu Onyejeme, on his part, added that the aim was to strengthen service delivery within general and cottage hospitals in the State.

He said after the government massive investment in upgrading and equipping existing general hospitals as well as the building of new ones in some strategic communities in the State; there was the need for extra manpower.

He disclosed that Family Planning Services are free in all Public Health Care Centres across the country.

The commissioner said that the duties of the TCI were very important and critical to the state, and assured that the state government was in full support of the awareness campaign.

He encouraged the participants to put in their best, see the exercise as expecting something greater from their hardwork and not to neglect the job.

In their separate demands, the Media Focal Person of TCI, Franca Madike and the Family Planning Coordinator in the State, Mrs Ify Unachukwu, informed the stakeholders, that the Initiative is ever ready to work with the state government in partnership, to educate Ndi-Anambra on the importance of Family Planning in the midst of societal challenges.
