Alleged assault: Senate gives CCT Chair two weeks to prepare his defence

Published by

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, has given Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Mr Danladi Umar, two weeks to prepare his defence against alleged assault.

The Committee pronouncement was sequel to a request by Mr Umar for two weeks to study the petition against him and prepare his defence.

Timzing Ramnap, counsel to a security guard, Clement Sagwak, had petitioned the Senate over an alleged assault of the latter.

Addressing Mr Umar who appeared before the Committee, on Tuesday, its Chairman, Senator Ayo Akinyelure while granting the request insisted that the Chairman of the CCT must appear, on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, to defend himself.

Akinyelure who hinted that the Senate would soon proceed on a two weeks break, on Thursday said the Committee was prepared to reconvene during the break to hear Umar’s defence of his alleged physical assault of Clement Sagwak.

Tribune Online checks revealed that Sagwak, a security guard with Reliable Guards Services Limited, had in his petition revealed that he was attacked by the CCT Chairman and a policeman attached to him after he informed him (Umar) that his car was not properly parked.

He told the Senate that Mr Umar slapped him several times at Banex Plaza, in Abuja and forced him to kneel down.

Umar, however, in a statement denied the allegation and further claimed that contrary to Sagwak narrative, he was a victim of an assault by people who chanted “secessionist and sectional slogans.”
