The Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu has said his administration will address the large scale exodus of financial assets and capital to other states from the supply and consumption of cows and other meat to the state.
Akeredolu stated this during the inauguration of an Ultra-modern big Dutchman Piggery and its supporting facilities at Ilutoro in Akure North local government area of the state.
According to the governor, who said the money expected to lubricate the state economy is being lost to other states from the supply of cows and other meat sources for consumption.
The governor said with the commissioning of the Ultra Modern Piggery Project at Ilutoro, the state government has embarked on the construction 1000km road under the Rural Access Mobility Project (RAMP).
He disclosed that the piggery project is expected to employ 4000 youths and women in the value chain process, saying this will undoubtedly translate to increased wealth for the farmers in the state.
He said “Apart from its jobs creating capability for our youths, dietary intake of lovers of pork would be enhanced, pork being an alternative to beef.
“More to that, our rural areas would also be opened up for development. It is mind-boggling that millions of Naira leave this State weekly on beef consumption, in form of capital flight.
“Money that would have remained within to lubricate the economy of the State is lost to other States that supply cow and other meat sources.
“This informed our decision to address the ugly trend by encouraging the production of a homegrown alternative in piggery and pig processing on one hand, and also to create veritable means of empowerment and employment for our teeming youths on the other hand”
Akeredolu said “There is no gainsaying the fact that Nigeria is currently going through serious economic challenges. Youth unemployment is a scourge that has rendered a large percentage of our youth in Nigeria productively unengaged despite constituting over 60 per cent of the population.
“Ondo State is no exception in this disturbing scenario as a large proportion of its youths are unemployed or underemployed despite the numerous opportunities that could be harnessed and transformed into economic activities.
“I am aware of the problems confronting Pig farmers as a result of urbanisation and lateral expansion of towns and cities which is gradually displacing our farms and rural dwellers.
“Despite the fact that our administration is doing a lot to reverse this trend, we believe more is still needed to be done.
“We are propelled by this unwholesome development to look inwards and transform our God-given resources into economic prosperity for the benefits of the people of the State.
“This edifice is put in place to accentuate the different economic benefits in pig production and processing. The pig as we all know is very prolific, as such, the rate of return on investment is high.”
The governor said the present administration in the state is more committed to eradicating poverty, hunger, insecurity and social vices and also from youth unemployment.
“At this juncture, we need to point out the value addition initiatives of our administration which has culminated in the establishment of a number of agro-allied industries.
“Worthy of mention is the Sunshine Chocolate Factory at Alade-Idanre for value addition to cocoa.
“Our chocolate from Idanre is on verge of hitting national and international markets. Not only that, Ethanol Processing Company at Okeluse is on the verge of completion, Ondo State, being the largest producer of cassava in the country is poised to supply the needed raw material.
“Furthermore, the Egg Powder Processing Factory at Emure-Ile in Owo Local Government and many others are all part of the initiatives of our administration to give value addition to Curb produce in Ondo State.”
