The Department of Theatre and Creative Arts of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo has unveiled and inducted its first students to rites of passage as a mark of entrance and acceptance into the role of Thespians.
The induction ceremony which signified the students’ exposure to the rules and regulations guiding the Theatre and Creative Arts is the maiden edition in the institution where 18 students of the school were inducted.
Speaking during the induction, the Head of Department, Dr Charles Ogazie, described the induction of the students as a dream true, saying “our students can now gladly called themselves thespians because they have been inducted into the arts of the theatre.
According to him, theatre is life and without theatre in any institution, there is no life on such campus and commended the institution management for the support but called on the school management to consider not limiting the programme to the NCE level.
He appealed to the school management to “gallantly pursue our degree course approval with Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.
“We can not afford to let go of these students to any other university in the name of pursuing a degree programme. We have laboured and we hope to retain them in the college for their degree programme.”
Speaking on the experience of the new inductees, he said, “It is the time for the town and the gown to meet. We have here people who are practitioners and we that are gown, and this is a forum for us to meet.
“Like our Chief priestess is from the town and we are in the gown. We have been going out to shoot films with them and I think we are mixing well. We are more into theories while they are into practice, so we mix together the theory and practice to become a role.”
The Chairman of the induction committee, Dr. Adeolu Abe, the induction of the 18 theatre and creative arts students will help to create an entertainment world aimed at shaping lives and society positively.
He described theatre as an imitation of life, society within a society, and a reflection of the world we live in and said “Ours is a world of intellect mixed with the talent to build destinies, humanity, value and entrepreneurial creativity on the stage of life.
“Therefore, make it a duty to be part of us in this endless journey in Adeyemi College, either as an enthusiast who patronises the theatre or a player on this side of the divide.
“I wish the inductees success as they come to the real world of the theatre and all others, beauty and glee of the theatre. We are here to bring the reality of life to your doorstep re-enacting and reproducing culture and history beyond documentation.”
The Provost of the school, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, who declared the programme open congratulated the young inductees whom he said would become professional performing artists, even though they have just started their formal academic and professional training in the performative arts and culture.
He enjoined the students to show more commitments in their studies knowing full well that the induction programme had just initiated them into serious academic and practical studies, and they must, therefore, give all that was required to become world-class celebrated scholars and practitioners of the arts.
