Oyo APC chairman, Chief Akin Oke
Acting Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Chief Akintola Oke, has denied conspiring with the wife of the immediate past governor of the state, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, to hijack the party in the state.
This is coming on the heels of the alarm raised by a group within the party in the state, the Concerned APC Stakeholders, over what it termed as the alleged hijack of the party structure by Mrs Ajimobi and Chief Oke.
The chairman of the group, Mr Olusoji Adelana, made this disclosure while addressing journalists, in Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Monday.
He contended that Mrs Ajimobi and Oke have hijacked the structure of the party because they are claiming to have federal backing, stressing that what transpired during the time of late Ajimobi where many people left the party is repeating itself.
Adelana stated: “There are three political blocs which are Teslim Folarin and Alao-Akala, Mrs Ajimobi and Baba Oke and unity group where we have Adeseun, Adeolu Akande, Soji Akanbi and others, while the Minister of Youth and Sports, Chief Sunday Dare, is said to be seeking unity among the blocs.
“For peace to reign, the unity group decided to work with the Ajimobi and Baba Oke camp, but Mrs Ajimobi has hijacked the party’s structure. A reconciliatory meeting held with Baba Oke on Sunday night was deadlocked as the acting chairman refused to shift grounds on the order of the former first lady.”
However, while reacting to the allegation, the acting chairman of APC in Oyo, Chief Oke, said: “I haven’t hijacked our party in this state with the collaboration of Mrs Florence Ajimobi. Such an allegation is ridiculous and unfounded. Mrs Ajimobi, like my humble self, believes in the unity of our party and can never do anything to the contrary.”
According to him, “in what respect can we hijack the structure of APC in Oyo State. Mrs Ajimobi is a unique first lady. Not many first ladies are interested in political activities. My respect for her dates back to when her husband, Senator Abiola Ajimobi was alive because of the wonderful supports she gave to our women and children.
“Should I abandon her because her husband is dead? Is it possible for me and her to hijack the APC or will I be running the show with the incoming executives of the party? These are things that are not feasible. What they are saying doesn’t sound sensible. It is not reasonable to me.”
But Adelana added that “I am using this medium to call on the national leadership of the party to call Mrs Ajimobi to order for the sake of the unity of APC and its future in the coming elections. APC called a stakeholders meeting today, how many people went there? Only a few, because the structure of the party has been hijacked.”
