Accident claims 15 in Imo, several injured

Tragedy struck on Saturday at Umuozu, Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State as no fewer than 15 women were crushed to death and others severely wounded, when a truck lost control and ran into a crowded market in the locality.

The ugly incident occurred at the popular Nkwommiri Market near the Nwangele River.

Sunday Tribune gathered that the brake of the truck failed and the driver lost control and crushed the women who displayed their wares by the roadside.

The incident which happened around 12 noon at the intersection between Anara- Orlu and Orlu – Amaraku Expressway left many others injured.

Our correspondent gathered that the truck which was descending a hill lost control, killing the woman after ramming into other vehicles.

Eye eyewitness said that some of the victims were crushed and dragged into a nearby river.

According to him, the community was battling to retrieve others who were trapped between the truck and the vehicles.

He said “The worst has happened here. A truck that lost its brakes has killed women trading on the road at Nkwommiri. More than ten of them and many trapped.

Another eye witness Chizoba said that the community was working with a government official to rescue those who were trapped.

The Police Spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, when contacted confirmed the incident.

Our correspondent gathered that the driver of the truck took to his heels immediately after the incident occurred.
