95 lives, property worth N324m lost to inferno, accidents in 2023 — Kano fire service

The Kano State Fire Service ( KSFS) has disclosed that no fewer than 95 people lost their lives as a result of accidents, fire incidents and other disasters that occurred from January to 29th October, 2023.

The KSFS Public Relation Officer (PRO), Sani Abdullahi Yusuf, made this known in an exclusive interview with Tribune Online on Tuesday, adding that the estimated property lost during the review was about N324,360,750.

According to him,”From January to 29th October 2023, the agency has attended to 520 fire incidents and other disasters.

“The Fire service had equally rescued 279 persons  from road accidents, people fell inside open water or well.”

Abdullahi further disclosed that the agency during the above time had received 84 false alarms, adding that these are calls people made but when our men went there for operations, it would turn out to be false.

He however added that the lives lost from different disasters from January to 29th October was 95, while the lives successfully save stood at 395 people

“The estimated property lost under review was N324,360,750, while property saved from being consumed by inferno or other disasters was N865,820,750.”

Commenting on why huge amounts of property were lost during different disasters, Mr.Abdullahi said that during fire incidents ,people failed to call the agency on time.

He stated that the victims that were affected by fire incidents did not call immediately when the ugly inferno had started, some of them would make calls to the agency when several damages had been done.

Abdullahi also disclosed that other challenges the agency faced was motorists not always giving easy access to fire service vehicles to move to the scenes of the incident on time.

“We were using this medium to urge members of the public to always cooperate with the agency, especially other road users to always give way to fire service trucks ,whenever they were in an emergency rushing to the scene of incidents.

“This would enable the agency to get to the scenes of incidents and save untimely loss of lives as well as prevent wanton destruction of property to either the inferno or accidents that had occurred._

He also urged members of the public to save the agency call numbers on their cellular phones, adding that this would enable them to make calls anytime fire incidents or accidents happened, thereby saving lives and property from being consumed.

He however called on members of the public that whenever fire incidents occurred before they would call the fire services, they should also use a first aid approach by using any applicable fire extinguishers at their disposal to quench the fire.

The agency cellular numbers to be use  are 081078878 ,0705124683,07026026400 and 08098922631 saying that by having these numbers on their handset would certainly pave the way for them to save innocent lives and prevent property from being lost.
