Governor Udom Emmanuel
SEVENTY FIVE Akwa Ibom indigenes studying at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) trapped in the ongoing violence in Jos, Plateau state, who were evacuated by the swift intervention of the state governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, have expressed joy for their rescue and commended the state government for the gesture.
Comrade Clifford Akwaowo, Special Assistant (SA) to the governor on Students Matters, who led the evacuated students to the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet described Governor Emmanuel as a caring father who can be trusted in critical circumstances.
He said: “The state government under the leadership of Governor Udom Emmanuel over time has placed premium on students’ welfare and has shown deep concern over their affairs. This is reflected in his many positive touches on issues of self development and security.”
He recalled that “over the weekend, the state government having acknowledged receipt of mails from Akwa Ibom students in Jos, Plateau State over the killing and maiming of innocent Nigerians immediately swung into action making available logistic and security provisions for the safe evacuation of all Akwa Ibom state students.”
Presenting the students to the Commissioner, Akwaowo said: “Today, I am glad to announce to the Akwa Ibom State students community and by extension, all Akwa Ibomites that our students have been safely evacuated and brought back to the state. I wish to commend our proactive Ministry of Education led by our aluta commissioner, Mrs Idongesit Etiebiet for always putting the welfare of students on the front burner.
“I commend also the leadership of NAAKISS UNIJOS chapter led by Comrade Blessed Ekong and Comrade Benjamin Akpan, deputy vice president (Northern Zone), who joined the NAAKISS worldwide president, Comrade Aniedi Michael on a thank you visit to the Commissioner for Education on their touch down,” he added.
The Education Commissioner enjoined the students to remain prayerful for total peace to return to the country.
