50 ex-Akwa-Ibom militants get ECOWAS/EU entrepreneurship lifeline to embrace peace

Published by

No fewer than 50 former militants drawn from Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government Areas trained under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the European Union (EU) have been empowered with start-up tools to undertake trades in various fields.

This followed the completion of their skill acquisition programme under the amnesty programme of Governor Udom Emmanuel administration which ensured the former agitators emerged from the bush to drop their arms for peace.

It was at a ceremony tagged; ‘Strengthening Peace, Security and Stability in West Africa’ which took place at the weekend at Ibom Hall grounds, Uyo, the state capital.

Governor Emmanuel, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Emmanuel Ekeuwem, commended the ECOWAS and the EU for partnering with the state government to bring peace to the troubled parts of the state torn by strife in the last couple of years.

“We want to commend the ECOWAS\EU for partnering the state government and assisting the repentant youths to leave criminalities by giving the needed skills that will make them be useful to themselves and the society,” he said.
