A left-wing former students leader who rose to prominence during anti-government protests was elected Chile’s next president on Sunday, after a bruising campaign against a free-market firebrand, the Daily Mail of UK reported.
With 56 per cent of the votes, Gabriel Boric, 35, defeated his opponent, Jose Antonio Kast, 55, who tried unsuccessfully to scare voters that his young, inexperienced opponent would upend Chile’s vaunted record as Latin America’s most stable, advanced economy.
Gabriel Boric was born in Punta Areneas, southern Chile, in 1986 and became a leader of student protests in 2011 that threw Chile into a state of gridlock.
He was a charismatic student leader with strong left-wing tendencies. Boric studied law in Santiago but never completed his degree, instead getting elected to Chile’s Congress in 2013.
He served two terms as a deputy and was one of the first people in Congress to come from outside Chile’s two traditional parties.
At 35, Mr Boric will become Chile’s youngest modern president when he takes office in March and only the second millennial to lead in Latin America, after El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele.
