Ahead of the 2023 election, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has distanced itself from supporting any political party or candidate in the election, just as it called on Christians to participate more in politics.
The Chairman of PFN in Ondo State, Bishop Kolawole Opayinka stated this in Akure on Thursday, while flagging off sensitisation of members and the citizenry on the need to get registered for permanent voter’s card (PVC) in readiness for the 2023 general elections.
Opayinka explained that PFN embarked on the exercise ahead of next year’s election, to check bad governance in the country starting from 2023, urging Christians to get involved in politics at all levels if they want to see a change in the system of governance.
He said: “Currently, we(PFN) have no candidate that we are supporting. Though we have a lot of our members who are politicians and we are encouraging more Christians to join politics so that they can enshrine good governance in the country.
“No one or political party is sponsoring this sensitization programme, it’s PFN that took this upon itself.
“We are calling more Christians to join political parties. We have the number but we have been passive when it comes to politics and elections.
“Some would say politics is dirty, but it’s through this that those who decide our fate are elected. So, we are encouraging Christians and the masses to go out and get registered for the PVC and those who are yet to collect their PVC should go and do so.
“Since we are peace-loving people and not ready to carry firearms, then we need to make the necessary change we desire by getting our PVC and ensure we go out to perform our civic responsibility on the election day.”
Also speaking, the Director(Southwest), Politics and Governance, Bishop Olugbenga Odusoga, stressed the need for the masses to get registered for PVC and collect their PVC, saying when righteous people increase in governance, the nation would grow.
He said as a royal priesthood, Christians should get involved in the nation’s governance and said “If we want the best for our nation, improved economy, security and education, we can only do this by getting registered for PVC. So, let every eligible person get registered and collect PVC before the next general elections.”
The state Director, Politics and Governance, Rev. Tunde Ogunsuyi said the sensitisation became necessary considering poor participation of the people on election day.
The state Chairman of PFN disclosed that the sensitisation would be taken to the other senatorial districts, while he directed all the delegates to sensitise their congregations on the need to vote in the 2023 general elections.
The Assistant Electoral officer (operations) Akure South, of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Mr Tope Onajobi, who represented the commission at the event commended PFN for organising the sensitization exercise.
He charged the ministers of God to encourage their congregations to get registered in the ongoing continuous registration exercise before June when it would close.
The PFN, however, promised to collaborate with INEC to ensure more eligible people get registered for PVC, particularly by announcing to their congregations where the registration centres are per time.
