In a bid to ensure that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wins the 2023 elections in Cross River, the party’s state caucus held a five-hour uninterrupted meeting in Calabar On Saturday night, to deliberate on all issues affecting the party, including their choice of candidate for 2023, zoning and all other issues, with the sole intent of ensuring victory in 2023.
The meeting had in attendance the former governors, Liyel Imoke, and Donald Duke, senator Sandy Onor, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, the state party chairman, Venatius Ikem, and several other caucus members.
Addressing the press after the meeting, the leader of the party, and former governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, explained the reasons for the meeting.
“First and Famous, it is a provision of our constitution, that the caucus must meet from time to time, the caucus is the highest advisory body of our party; what happens in the caucus, is that, the caucus is able to discuss issues that affects the party, as we plan towards winning the general elections.
“Our party is organized, our party is a party that is well managed. We have a chairman with experience, he is a chairman with a long history of political participation. So as he leads the caucus, he invites us to deliberate on all the issues that affect the party as we move towards winning the upcoming general elections.
“You know the party primaries will start in a few weeks time, the PDP is poised in Cross River State, to take the state to where we used to sit as a victorious party; we have never lost an election, since 1999 in PDP, a defection is not a loss.
“But as a party, since 1999, PDP hasn’t lost an election in Cross River; and in 2023, we do not intend to lose, that is why the caucus is convened, so that we can rub minds, share our opinions and strategize towards winning the 2023 general elections.
“We also talk about how we manage our party, and the affairs of the party, so we have just had a very successful caucus meeting; that was very well managed by the party chairman, and we are all very happy and confident that come 2023, we will win the elections.
“Everything is always on that table in the caucus; we don’t keep away things. Just like we have at the national level issue of zoning, we also discuss them at the caucus meeting,” Imoke explained.
On his part, the state party chairman, Venatius Ikem, also explained that, “Nobody was eliminated today, if you will have to read our social media comments, they are different from our caucus positions and decisions we take after deliberations.
“We had a rumbustious discussion on all issues, including zoning, at the appropriate time, you will know how we resolved those issues. All the PDP aspirants are assured of a level playing field, pending when we take decisions on all the matters we are discussing about.
“Our party will take its own decision at the appropriate time; wherever you hear zoning of party to the South or positions to the South, I am sure it is not PDP. We are just discussing now, and we have said you will hear the outcome of the deliberations. You will hear from us,” he assured.
