The 64th annual Grammy Awards will likely be postponed due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19, the Daily Mail of UK reported on Tuesday.
The ceremony is currently set for January 31, 2022, at the LA arena Crypto.com, formerly STAPLES Center, with host, Trevor Noah.
A source disclosed that the postponement was ‘looking likely,’ with the ceremony pushed back to a later date.
More than 21,200 new COVID cases were reported in Los Angeles County on January 1, according to the LA Public Health data.
Last year, the Grammys were delayed from January 31, 2021 until it took place on March 14 at the LA Convention Convention instead of STAPLES.com – to allow for less crowding.
Last year’s delay was announced on January 5, 2021 after a spike in COVID-19.
Trevor hosted last year and is set to host this year’s ceremony as well.
According to the outlet, the Recording Academy is known to prefer to hold the event at an arena at full capacity due to the fact that they get considerable ticket revenue.
Last year they lost ticket revenue due to the reduced capacity.
The MusiCares gala (which is set for January 29) and the Recording Academy’s Pre-Grammy Gala (set for January 30) will likely be moved too if the Grammy Awards are moved.
The Grammy nominations were revealed in full on November 23, 2021.
Composer and musical artist Jon Batiste surpassed all nominees with an impressive 11 nominations, while Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and H.E.R. scored eight each and Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo tied with seven.
Former enemies Taylor Swift and Kanye West are up against each other in one of the biggest categories for Album of the Year, with their records Evermore and Donda respectively.
Reunited Swedish pop group ABBA scored their first-ever Grammy nomination in their 48-year history for ‘I Still Have Faith In You’ in the Record of the Year category.
Kanye and his album Donda was set to battle it out with his rival Drake in the Best Rap Album category – along with Tyler, The Creator, Nas, and J. Cole – however last month Drake withdrew his two Grammy nominations (Best Rap Performance for song Way 2 Sexy and Best Rap Album for Certified Lover Boy).
