Lawan
President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has said the National Assembly was determined to ensure adequate oversight functions by its relevant Committees on the Federal Government revenue generating agencies.
Senator Lawan gave the pledge on Wednesday while speaking with journalists in Abuja.
While he expressed concern over the rising debt profile of the country under the present administration occasioned by external borrowings, Senator Lawan said the only way to mitigate it was to shore up the revenue profile of the federal government.
He disclosed that effective from this month or early January, the leadership of the National Assembly would open an interface with certain Government Owned Enterprises and revenue-generating agencies which he further revealed would be on a quarterly basis.
He said: “This year, we are going to have engagement with revenue-generating agencies on a quarterly basis, they have a target and must be ready to brief us. ‘We hope to start the first meeting, either this month or early February. We want to see how we can make a difference in the area of revenue-generating agencies.
“Nobody likes borrowing, whether as an individual or government. We are concerned about our level of borrowing.
“The Government Owned Enterprises, (GOEs) are supposed to give us more money, we are expecting maybe a trillion or double that amount from them. We must support them, supervise them and keep them on their toes to reduce our level of borrowing. When we generate more, we borrow less.”
Appraising the security situation across states in the federation, the President of the Senate assured the military of prompt legislative interventions through approval of the Executive request for funds to boost military operations. He commended members of the Armed Forces for their resilience in confronting the insurgents despite what he called a shortfall in the arms and equipment needed.
“Our country is going through a trying period. There are so much efforts to restore the security in the North East which was under Boko Haram at that time but it has improved. But we have other challenge in the North West, North Central, South-West and the South-East.
“This requires that the Armed forces have to be at their best and that requires the political leaders to play their role.
“Our Armed forces have been doing their best despite the fact that we don’t give them all that they need.
“On the part of the national assembly, we will continue to give our best to ensure that they meet up with the challenge of securing the country. I still believe that the situation can be turned around if the political leaders continue to give their best. I am sure that tomorrow will be better by the Grace of God.”
