2020 Hajj: We’ll not compromise safety of Nigerian pilgrims ― NAHCON

As the Muslim world waits for Saudi Arabia’s official decision on this year’s Hajj exercise, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has assured that the health and safety of Nigerian pilgrims will not be compromised.

This was contained in a press release signed and made available to Tribune Online by NAHCON Deputy Director, Information and Publication, Mallam Mousa Ubandawaki, on Saturday.

According to Ubandawaki, the Commission’s commissioner in charge of Operations, Licensing and Tour operators, Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji Hardawa, gave the assurance while fielding questions from the international media organizations of France Radio and the Voice of America (VOA) in his office on Friday.

He stated that Hardawa assured that while NAHCON was waiting for Saudi government’s official announcement on the 2020 Hajj, the commission would also take into consideration the health and safety of Nigerians in deciding its participation in the annual pilgrimage.

According to the commissioner, the lives and safety of the pilgrims were more important and paramount than any other consideration. “Whatever the final decision of Saudi Arabia on Hajj 2020 maybe, we on our part will make sure that the well-being and safety of our country’s contingent is paramount and secure,” Hardawa was quoted to have said.

Asked for the commission’s position on the 2020 Hajj, considering the limited time to the commencement of Hajj, the commissioner said that NAHCON was currently consulting with relevant stakeholders in the country to come up with advisory paper to guide the Federal Government in making final decisions.

“We have just concluded the first phase of our consultation and interface with the National Assembly committees and leadership,” he said.
